"It makes 'Matrix Revolutions' look like 'Matrix Reloaded.'"
While Speed Racer (2008) does fail on every possible level, the 2001 ending brought me joy as it not only referenced (and attempted to sully) a beautiful touchstone in film but hammered home the inconceivably self-righteous and self-serious “themes” only the Wachowskis can awkwardly shoe-horn into mindless popcorn fare.
Not only does the film make the case that they learned nothing from their own muck of a trilogy, they didn’t or couldn’t learn anything from Lucas’ inborn-baby either, or else they would have at the very least made Race City (or whatever nonsense name you’d like) look a little different from Coruscant and would not have spent 45 minutes discussing fluctuations in market prices based upon racing outcomes.
It’s a death knell when in a “kids’ movie” even I have to whine, “When are they going to race?”
