For a while now, one of my friend Morgan’s favorite jokes has been the John Grisham opus Playing for Pizza, where a choker football player flees to the obscure refuge of the Italian Football League. Presumably the IFL is so bankrupt it pays its players with a delicious combination of dough, sauce, and cheese; whether pizza is a viable currency in the currently chaotic Italian markets remains unknown.
In a stroke of genius, Phoenix Pictures has optioned the book, looking to bring this heart-warming tale of comraderie, hope, and brick ovens to the big screen. John Grisham could write the local police blotter for the Alleghany Times and still get it adapted.
